What options do you have for medical coding certifications?

A certification is necessary if you are looking for medical billing jobs. Most employers tend to hire only those professionals who have completed any certification course simply because it ensures that the person they are hiring has some basic knowledge about the field. There are so many options available at different levels that you can choose from, when it comes to medical coding certifications. Let us have a look at some of the options:

AHIMA Certification: AHIMA stands for American Health Management Association.The association is responsible for most of the certification courses that are available in the field of medical billing.Coders, who do not have much or any experience in the field, can benefit from these certification programs, as these are the entry-levelcourses. Being certified with any of these courses can open the myriad of opportunities for you. However if you have experience in medical billing and are looking for a certification, then CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) is the course for you. For advanced coders, a credential called CHPS, certified in healthcare, privacy and security.

AAPC certification: People who are looking to get certification in any specific area, American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) has four different options. These options include
Certified Professional Coder
Certified Professional Coder – Hospital
Certified Professional Coder – Prayer
Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder

Although to enroll in these certifications, you need to have an experience of at least two years, but an Apprentice Certification is attained even if you do not have that much experience and still clear the exam.

PAHCC Certification: The certification focuses on specific areas of healthcare including courses like Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pain Management to name a few.Depending upon your specialty, or the field you are interested to enter in, you can go for any of these certifications.

BMSC Certification: Board of Medical Specialty Coding is another certification that you can do to get into the medical billing. Similar to the AAPC certifications, you need to have at least a couple of experience behind you. Specialty Coding Professional certification is the name given to the program. For professionals who have more experience are eligible for Advanced Coding Specialist Certification.
