Job description and the required skills for EKG technician profile!

Electrocardiograph technician or more commonly known as EKG techs are medical experts who conduct electrocardiograph tests. The tests are meant for measuring and recording activities of the heart.

After the tests are conducted, physicians and cardiologists then interpret and analyse the test results for diagnosing and treatment of vascular diseases such as irregular heart rhythms and pacemaker problems.

Duties of EKG technicians: 

When a patient voices health concerns such as chest paint, these professionals perform electrocardiograms for the heart monitoring purpose. The tests are also performed as a part of routine check examinations or pre surgical tests. They are familiar with how to connect electrodes to a patient’s body parts such as chest, and how to obtain EKG readings by controlling the machines switches. Techs who have undergone a more vigorous training can also conduct stress test, under which patients are made to walk on treadmills at a high speed. These experts then study and analyze the heart of the patient, reacting to the exertion.

Some other responsibilities:

An EKG technician who has undergone advanced training can also perform some other jobs such as conducting holter monitor tests. The test is meant for observing patients heart continuously for 24 hours of doing normal activities. This is done by connecting the electrodes and a small EKG machines to the chest of the patient. It is the responsibility of these technicians to make the patients feel comfortable during the whole process. They explain to the patients what the procedure is all about and also record their medical histories. Apart from that, they may also have to schedule the appointments, maintain the test equipment and review patient’s files.

Skills required for becoming an EKG technician:

A candidate who wants to become EKG technician must have excellent written and spoken skills. They should have strong interpersonal communication skills since they have to deal regularly with patients and doctors. They should be well organized and detail oriented. They must possess excellent mechanical ability and should have a strong judgment. They should have an ability to follow up the detailed instructions. In addition to it, candidate with strong physical stamina are better suited for this profile, since they have to walk and stand most of the times. Their attitude should be sympatric towards others, considering the fact that they have to deal with patient who may be suffering from life-threatening problems.
